These books, entitled ‘Borders’, are inspired by the Icelandic sjónabók manuscripts – ten handmade books that survive from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries detailing hundreds of embroidery designs. These historic records of patterns were painstakingly drawn and painted and then shared between friends and families. This democratic sharing of forms, gives everyone the opportunity to create and develop their own designs. The pages in these books continue this handmade approach and show a selection of border patterns that can be used for embroidering fabric or knitting.
