This research continues from Moccia’s long-term work, Ministry of Loneliness, which similarly investigates the political context of psychological and emotional states of being. The origins of nostalgia mirror the emergence of Western modernisation and the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Its connection to feelings of homesickness began to also represent a longing across physical and temporal spaces for those separated from their homelands through migration, labour and military service. Setting aside sentimentality, Moccia exposes how nostalgia is exploited to govern and direct emotions by evoking an idealised past and driving nationalistic and ideological interests.

Rebecca Moccia’s recent exhibitions include Panorama, Pozzuoli (2025); Italian Pavilion, 15th Gwangju Biennale (2024); Galeria Madragoa, Lisbon (2024); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Guarene (2023); Mazzoleni, Turin (2023); ICA Milano (2023); Jupiter Woods, London (2022). Departing from the exploration of the Ministry of Loneliness – established in 2018 in the United Kingdom and replicated in 2021 in other countries such as Canada and Japan – the artist’s work develops a reflection on the political and social structures that shape the emotional state of loneliness and its perception in contemporary society. In the project, which stems from a research trip unfolding between Italy, the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom, the phantasmal and pervasive shadow of isolation that permeates Western societies takes shape in a layered investigation extending to the very roots that trigger it: from the advancement of the techno-scientific order of modern life to the rise of liberal capitalism.
The volume reproduces the collection of notes that formed the basis of Moccia’s project in its entirety – a digital collage with diary-like traits, consisting of texts, images, reports and reflections on various kinds of documents. The critical texts by Chiara Nuzzi – curator of the exhibition – and Vincenzo Estremo broaden Rebecca Moccia’s work on a theoretical level, highlighting how between loneliness and individualisation there lies a dialectical relationship inextricably bound up in the modes of late-capitalist production.

Contributors
Vincenzo Estremo / Chiara Nuzzi

Credits
Published by Humboldt Books and Fondazione ICA Milano, realized with the support of Outset Contemporary Art Fund and Mazzoleni, London – Torino / Design: SMV – Studio Moretti Visan

Publisher Humboldt Books, 2023
170 × 240 mm
Paperback
168pp.

Published by the Italian Institute of Culture in Seoul in collaboration with Propaganda, the publication Loneliness: Rebecca Moccia's Ministries of Loneliness and Timely Conversations, recounts the work carried out for the Italian Pavilion of the 15th Gwangju Biennale exhibition and forum.
