Figure/Ground is a publication featuring work by a range of artists and writers exploring cartography and orientation, published in December 2020.This is the first in a series of Numbered Editions,an experimental imprint for artists' writing,co-founded by Nathan O'Donnell and Marysia Wieckiewicz-Carroll.The publication has its origins in a 12-day curated residency at Cow House Studio in 2017,organised in collaboration with the centre's director,Frank Abruzesse.Contributing artists:Jennifer Brant,Marianne Hoffmeister Castro,Serena Lee,Eoghan McIntyre,Julia Mejnertsen,Wendy Peza, Shelia(Wilson) Restack, and Abigail Taubman.

Nathan O’Donnell is a writer and artist based in Dublin. He has published fiction and non-fiction; he is also one of the co-editors of Paper Visual Art and much of his work happens in the context of contemporary art. He has been awarded artist’s commissions from IMMA, Ormston House, Dublin City Council, the Arts Council, and South Dublin County Council. He had his first solo exhibition (focused on alternative educational philosophies) at the Illuminations Gallery, Maynooth University, in 2020. He has edited and produced several project-based publications, often in collaboration, and in 2020, with Marysia Wieckiewicz-Carroll, he co-founded Numbered Editions, an experimental imprint for artists’ writing. He was writer-in-residence at Maynooth University, 2020–21. He lectures at Trinity College and on the MA/MFA Art in the Contemporary World at NCAD, and he is a curatorial research fellow at IMMA, where he co-organises the annual, IMMA International Summer School and contributed to exhibition research and curatorial programming.
